The Yankees lost the series finale to the Rays at Tropicana Field in a game that was not close

The Yankees were routed in the series finale to the Rays on the day that the impactful Joey Gallo trade became official. The final score was 14–0 Rays at Tropicana Field and Gerrit Cole flat out did not have command or any success from the very beginning of the game as he allowed four earned runs before recording an out for the first time in his very successful career.

Overall in Thursday’s game, he pitched 5.1 innings, allowed six hits, seven earned runs (eight overall), two walks, struck out 10 and gave up one homer. After 15 pitches were thrown in the first inning the Yankees were losing 4–0.

Hippo’s real name is James Leslie. He played 13 seasons, won an ERA title, a pitching triple crown (he led the league in wins (22), strikeouts (148) and ERA (1.74) in 1918) and finished with a great 2.49 ERA in 13 seasons. He only played for the Yankees in four of his 13 seasons. He got his nickname Hippo from his height (6–4) and weight (215).

The Yankees had a chance to sweep the Tampa Bay Rays for the second time this season after not converting the series clincher last time. They lost the last game of the series 9–1 the first time and this was even more of a beat down this time to prevent the sweep.

A sweep would have been ideal going into the series in Miami, but they have been playing much better against Tampa Bay this season than they did last season. This season they are 7–9 against Tampa Bay and 6–4 in their last 10 games. Last season the Yankees finished a much worse 2–8 in the condensed 10 games against Tampa Bay during the 60-game covid season.

The Yankees have been playing well the last few weeks but they have repeatedly not been able to sweep a series when they have had a chance this season. This was the ninth time this season that the Yankees could have swept a series but they lost the last game to prevent a sweep. If they would have won five or six of those games then they would have the second wild card spot now and would be much closer in the division.

However, the Yankees have won five of their last six series. In their last six series going back to win they won two out of three against the Mariners before the All-Star Break from July 6–8, they have gone a solid 11–7 in their last 18 games.

Cole’s ERA went from 2.74 to 3.11 after allowing his seven earned runs. Abreu’s ERA went up from 1.88 in four games to 5.65 after allowing six earned runs and three homers without allowing an out.

Holmes was acquired from the Pirates for Hoy Jun Park and Diego Castillo on July 26. Park had been having a very good season at Triple-A for the Yankees but the analytics department did not think highly of him and he was not one of the team’s best prospects. There is the potential of Park having a solid rest of the season for the Pirates. This was right after the Yankees salary dumped Justin Wilson and the very effective Luis Cessa to the Reds to help them stay under the luxury tax.

Holmes had a subpar 4.93 ERA in 44 games with the Pirates this season (42 innings) but his ERA would be much better if not for three games, so his season ERA is a little deceiving.

He allowed five runs in 0.1 innings on April 6, five runs in 0.1 innings on June 11 and four runs in 0.2 innings on July 20. In the month of May, in 10 games he threw 10 innings, did not allow an earned run and had 10 strikeouts. After his scoreless game on June 9, he had a great 2.63 ERA but then he allowed five earned runs in his next game and his ERA rose up to 4.23.

DJ LeMahieu had a 37-game on base streak coming into the game but it ended when he popped up to right in the 8th. Odor had his 9-game hitting streak snapped. He was 11–36 (.306) with seven runs scored, three homers and nine RBI during the streak. He raised his average from .216 to .232 during the streak but after going 0–4 his average is back down to .227.

The Yankees also acquired Anthony Rizzo on Thursday for a two not top prospects, one day before the trade deadline, to give them two impact lefty bats in the lineup combined with Joey Gallo after previously not having an impact lefty bat with Luke Voit on the injured list most of the season.

Gallo is under team control through the 2022 season and Rizzo is a rental, which limited what the Cubs could get in return.

Since the Athletics won on Thursday, the Yankees are now 3.5 games out of the wild card. The Yankees are now the favorite to get the second wild card they will now be even more dangerous in the playoffs with the additions of Gallo and Rizzo. They are apparently not done and it seems like they will try to acquire a starting pitcher before the 4:00 p.m. trade deadline on Friday.
