Danny Etling named starter

In his after practice report, LSU head coach Ed Orgeron named veteran Danny Etling starting QB vs. BYU. Etling was the odds-on favorite to get the job after getting the starting job in 2016 at the fourth game.

Through camp, incoming freshman Myles Brennan, a four star pro-style quarterback out of Mississippi, saw his reps grow with the first team and soon became the top quarterback in practice not named Danny Etling.

LSU’s other incoming freshman quarterback, four star athlete Lowell Narcisse, was often mentioned after Brennan, but Orgeron made sure to mention how close all the quarterbacks were. Narcisse had the added benefit of being on campus for spring practice, but after having essentially spent the last two years out of football due to consecutive knee injuries Narcisse has spent most of his time just becoming acclimated to playing football again.

“It’s a tremendous feeling and honor and I won’t let my team down,” Etling said of becoming the starter. Etling may not have the live arm of Brennan or the ability to run like Narcisse, but proved last season that he makes sound decisions and can keep the LSU offense moving down the field—something years of Les Miles offenses had trouble doing.

In first year offensive coordinator Matt Canada’s system, Etling’s existing rapport with the receivers and running backs should pay dividends in getting Canada’s motion-based spread system off the ground quicker.

That doesn’t mean the freshmen won’t see the field, though. Brennan has real talent and can run the style of offense Orgeron grew accustomed to under Pete Carroll at USC. Les Miles never really gave his backup quarterbacks much in the way of game work, but it’s hard to imagine Orgeron and Canada not turning the reigns over to the younger guys quicker during games that are already in-hand. LSU has to keep an eye on the future and with the propensity of quarterbacks to transfer, keep as many on the roster happy.

LSU opens the season in two weeks against BYU in Houston.
