What If The Virgin Mary Had Wanted An Abortion?

It’s a thought experiment that Catholics don’t like to think about.

I was raised Catholic, and I went to Catholic school. And I often wondered: What if the Virgin Mary had said no? What if she decided she didn’t want to have Jesus, and watch him die?

After all, the angel doesn’t ask Mary. In the story, he simply tells her what will happen. At the end, she does accept, but this is not presented as a choice. God has chosen her.

Catholics have a lot of strange answers to this that they apply to all unplanned, unwanted pregnancies.

All the arguments against abortion can find their problematic roots in these ideas about Mary. And does this sound realistic? I mean, if she had never had sex before, and she was about to get married, one can assume a man at some point attempted to have sex with her, and she declined. So why isn’t Mary’s ability to say “no” ever explored or revered?
