Tyler Dunne Guest Speaker

Tyler Dunne was nice enough to come into our classroom to speak about his career and help inspiring journalists with his knowledge. Tyler grew up in western New York and ever since he was a child wanted to be a sports journalist. During his first few years as an inspiring journalist Tyler reached out to many organizations and was able to do some coverage for them when certain teams were playing the Buffalo Bills. He attended St. John Fisher college for one year, and later transferred to Syracuse University where he finished his college career and attended Syracuse’s journalism school. After college he started to work at many small news papers and then wanted to go back home and landed at the Buffalo News. He then went on to cover the Packers for a few years after one of the editors remembered him from work that he had done when he was just getting into the business and hired him to cover the Packers. He finally wanted to go back home to New York and covered the Buffalo Bills for the crazy 2015 season which had many memorable moments for him. After the season was over he was scooped up by Bleacher Report where he is now covering the NFL and working on stories for their website and produces a lot of meaningful stories.

Bringing Mr. Dunne into the class he was able to spread a lot of messages that can help a journalism major in their career. The first thing that I took from him telling story’s of his career was when he sat down with Brett Favre and had to keep his fandom hidden and make sure that he was professional and got what he needed to do a story. I also found it very interesting when Dunne was talking about how many people you need to interview for a story. He talked about how he had to reach out to all of Rodgers college friends and former teammates to get information. I think it made sense the fact that a former player would be more giving of information than a current player and you can really tell how the player was in the locker room. Tyler also talked about a lot of experiences he had where players were not happy about what he had written and how to deal with it and have a thick skin in order to make sure that you are still able to produce content that is true to the reader. There are a lot of things that could have been taken from Tyler Dunne coming into the classroom but he harped on the idea of having thick skin and I think in this industry that is the most important thing. I think having thick skin is such an important aspect of being a reporter and you cannot let anything get in your way of reporting a story and not be afraid of anything that will come after it because it will even out and all work out in the end.
