Where Are the Resolutioners?

Something strange is afoot. I’ve been to the gym a few times this week, fully expecting it to be packed. But… it’s been empty. The Pilates class before the one I take on Saturdays is always full. This morning that first class was cancelled. Only one person had signed up for it.

Traditionally, this is the week I dread. January 1st means it’s hard to find a parking space at the gym, and fitness classes are filled to their limits. This past week, even a free yoga class only had three people in it (including myself). Regulars must be staying home for the same reason I signed up for those classes as soon as they were available. We all thought they would be full.

Something much bigger is going on. Last weekend, I went to a few sporting goods stores to check out their sales. The clothing racks were pretty empty, so it appears that people are intending to working out. But where are they? Companies like Peloton, Mirror, and Tonal have been growing rapidly. What if 2019 is the year that the home workout market has finally overtaken the traditional gym?
