Signs you are living in survival mode

We all feel stuck at some point in our lives, right?

But have you ever felt so stuck that you do not even have the energy to answer a phone call that’s just next to you because neither you want to pick up that phone nor you have the energy to have a conversation? And it feels like you have to push yourself very hard to do something that will barely take 5 minutes.

Does this sound familiar?

If yes, then you must have been living in survival mode. Not living, but just surviving each day, somehow feeling overwhelmed with anything and everything.

But why do people go into survival mode? What makes them live a life that has no fun, no satisfaction, and zero motivation? Well, there are many reasons that can lead a person into survival mode.

Being in survival mode for too long can be destructive for our mental as well as physical health. That is why it is essential to know if you are just having a bad day or if it is a survival mode that has entered your life. Here are a few signs that will help you know if you are living in survival mode.

One of the most common signs of being in survival mode is feeling lonely and hopeless. You may feel that nobody can help you in this situation, and nobody will help you out. This constant worry makes you feel lonely and hopeless.

There can be multiple tasks at your table, but your helplessness will make you do them all alone. Most people also feel helpless because they think that asking for help will make them a failure and make them look like weak, dependent people. Due to this mindset, they keep doing the same thing and suffer from it all alone. To deal with this helplessness, it is crucial to strengthen your bonds and ask for help for better mental health.

In survival mode, your only focus is on getting through the day. You don’t have the energy to make plans for the next few days or months. if someone asks you about any meetings or events, it gives you a panic attack because you realize how little energy you have to deal with day-to-day life.

It feels like planning for a day is enough, according to the energy you have. Also, you find it hard to complete the day’s tasks, and any difficulty with the tasks causes major anxiety.

People who are in survival mode can often increase their risk for anxiety and depression, as both the body and brain constantly work overtime to achieve feelings of safety.

This constant mental activity requires the individual to be hyper-alert at all times, which leads to mental and physical exhaustion. Your mind only focuses on combating bad situations, so you feel worried and anxious most of the time. It also happens because you think of the worst-case scenario and expend your energy on the ‘what ifs’.

Another common sign of living in survival mode is getting zoned out easily. Zoning out just means your brain has switched over to autopilot. This can happen when your brain recognizes that you can complete your current task, whether that’s folding laundry or walking to work, without really thinking about it.

Your memory gets affected, and you also find it hard to concentrate on things. Even when you are surrounded by people, you’ll get easily distracted and find yourself zoned out after a while. In survival mode, no matter how many people are around you, you still feel alone deep inside. And because you zone out easily, your small day-to-day tasks also seem like big challenges.

People who are in survival mode wake up feeling tired, which is an unusual experience. This one sign can tell that you are not having a bad day but are actually living in survival mode.

If you feel tired instead of fresh and energized every morning and lack motivation, then it can be a sign of survival mode. And just because your morning gets affected, your whole day gets ruined due to exhaustion and tiredness.

Most of us deal with survival mode due to burnout, grief, or accumulated stress, but fortunately, it can be dealt with. The first step in coping with survival mode is to recognize it; the above-mentioned signs can help with this identification. Apart from that, various strategies and professional help can help you come out of survival mode.
